Sample Nursing Home Volunteer Letter to Legislator

Dear (Legislator’s Name),

I am a volunteer at (Nursing Home Name) in your district. I volunteer my time to help Pennsylvania’s frail elderly as a way to thank them for the sacrifices they made for our commonwealth and country. My goal is to help them find comfort as they age, and to live with dignity and respect.

I am writing to ask that you include adequate Medicaid funding in the 2009-10 state budget. I know this is a difficult year for the budget because of what has happened to our economy. I know legislators face tough decisions. But I believe the care of our most frail elderly and disabled in nursing homes should be a budget priority.

Nursing homes have been underfunded for years, and it’s the residents and staff who pay the price. In fact, because of underfunding, many nursing homes are finding it difficult to hire and retain staff. As a volunteer, I do all I can to help. I am hoping you can convince the General Assembly to do the same.

If state legislators keep cutting funding for nursing homes, nursing homes won’t be able to continue to provide the quality care they give to their residents, and they won’t be able to retain the compassionate, hardworking employees who meet their needs. Pennsylvania is an aging state, and it’s more important than ever that we invest in care for the elderly.

Please ensure Pennsylvania nursing homes get the resources they need to continue providing quality care to the oldest and frailest among us.

Sincerely,
